GND Solutions’ LoRa-enabled temperature sensors reduce restaurant operational cost by 40 percent.
Semtech Corporation announced that GND Solutions (GND), an Internet of Things (IoT) solution provider for the industrial, smart city and smart energy segments, has integrated Semtech’s LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN® protocol into its new smart refrigeration solutions for restaurant applications.
Recently, a seven-story, five-star restaurant in Dubai deployed GND’s LoRa-based solutions into its kitchens and refrigerators. Following the solution’s deployment, the restaurant saw a reduction of up to 40 percent of its operational cost due to greater food management efficiency.
Siva Reddy, Founder and MD at GND Solutions, said:
“Accurately, efficiently and reliably monitoring food from refrigerator to table is one of the most prominent challenges in a restaurant setting.”
“Utilizing the advantages of Semtech’s LoRa devices for a simple deployment, GND installed a single gateway and 500 sensors in the Dubai restaurant. Restaurant managers were then able to leverage the IoT solution to monitor the temperature data of food in real time as it moves throughout the kitchen.”
In the United States alone, food waste is estimated to be between 30 to 40 percent of the total food produced annually. This amount corresponds to approximately $161 billion worth of food in 2010. In the restaurant industry, managers carefully monitor food from refrigerator to table to prevent waste and extend shelf life. However, many factors affect food safety and contribute to waste, most notably human error in handling and storage.
GND’s GLoSe-916T is a LoRaWAN-based wireless IoT solution for humidity and temperature monitoring. For restaurant applications, these IoT solutions provide real time data for managers to ensure the shelf life of food is maximized and it remains safe to consume. The LoRa-enabled sensors report temperature data to managers at customizable intervals to eliminate human error and allow close surveillance of food condition and safety. Sensors simply deploy into refrigerator infrastructure without additional wiring, operate up to two years on a single battery charge and accurately report temperatures between -40°C and 100°C.
“Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol provide the ideal feature set for smart refrigeration applications, enabling consistent and accurate temperature monitoring,” said Marc Pegulu, Vice President of IoT in Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “By leveraging LoRaWAN’s proven advantages, GND is able to accelerate a product to market that keeps refrigerator contents safe, preventing waste and reducing cost to the customer.”
